Early game
Also known as ’when to decide the pace of the battle’. This is the time when most arrow exchanges take place, and also the moment when you probe how your opponent thinks and reacts.
Today we’ve reached a new milestone in our decade long development of Europa Barbaroum 2 for Medieval II: Total War: Kingdoms! (and yes it will always remain Medieval 2: Total War and not Total War: Medieval 2:P) Our newest version 2.35 is now released. Some of the stuff you can expect in this version. In Europa Barbarorum you will either lead or face the peoples that most impacted history in ancient Europe and its neighboring lands. In northern Europe live the ’barbarians’, and although they might look alike, there are more differences than similarities, certainly in the ways of war. Europa Barbarorum II is a total conversion modification (mod). It covers roughly the same time period as the Imperial Campaign included with Rome: Total War, but made for use with Medieval 2 Total War: Kingdoms v1.05 (M2TW) Contrary to what the name might imply, Europa Barbarorum is not solely focused on barbarian factions.
Deployment. First of all, you need to anticipate what you will be facing even when you’re still in the deployment phase and you’re placing your ranged units. Which faction my opponent is playing with? What are the terrain features? How can I take advantage of my range / ammo / numbers / accuracy?
A correct deployment of missiles can give you an edge over your opponent, since the less you run your men around, the more effective your ranged units are. A unit is most vulnerable to missiles when moving or running, and if your ranged troops are taking casualties when moving they cannot even shoot back in retaliation.
When playing with lots of missile units, as in steppe battles, this can be the difference between dominating or losing the skirmish phase. You need to have a plan, and anticipate what you must do to achieve your goals: think ahead and plan accordingly, nothing is more important.

Keep also in mind that running your men is a source of fatigue. ’What can a soldier do who charges when out of breath?’ Missile units are no exception: their general performance, especially their speed, can be significantly hindered: not the greatest source of fun when your archers get caught in melee by cavalrymen lusting for blood.
Formation. What have we learnt from the introductory concept of beaten zone? I don’t want to have my men packed up in the beaten zone of my opponent’s ranged units. There is a simple solution for long-ranged missile duels: use long and thin formation of loosely formed archers, and don’t position missile or light troops too closely one to each other. This minimises the amount of men inside the beaten zone, and therefore the casualties. In one of gamegeek2’s commentary videos on YouTube this is clearly evident: the power of the formation gives his Toxotai Kretikoi a clear edge in the missile fight against multiple archer units in big squares.
However, since nothing comes for free in life, there is a clear drawback when using this tactic: manoeuvrability. Long lines of loose formation infantry are clumsy and wheel slowly, which is a problem if you have no map control and when playing in Huge scale.
The main reason why everyone likes using square formations for cavalry rather than having shallow lines is because they are a lot easier to manoeuvre. Horse archers are very mobile, but come in low numbers. There are small ’tricks’ to achieve a proper micromanagement of their formation, for example placing them in column formation while running on flanks or from one flank to the other. Such expedients pay off really well: according to the beaten zone table, the column is better when receiving flanking fire, so that you can minimize your casualties.
However, even if loose formation is such a powerful tool to get an advantage, close formation can play a role as well. When massing fire on one single target, several units in close formation can be devastating.
Targeting. Choosing the right target for your missile units is another point to be aware of.
Macilrille wrote a guide to archery which contains some good advice.Now, the Vanilla advisor would repeat 100+ times that you could weaken the enemy centre with missiles and then push through with a charge. I never found or find this to work. What I do instead is to prioritise my targets, what you want to take out with archers is the low-armour-high–lethality units of your enemy. These will often be enemy archers and slingers (especially HAs) that are covered from your cavalry, or elite units with little armour such as Falxmen, Galatian Wild Men, Gallic Swordsmen and German Slagonez and Wargozez. Especially you want to target “Scare” units such as Wargozez, Gaesetae, etc.If none of these are around or your cavalry can ride down enemy slingers and archers with no interference from nasty pointy things, what you want to target is enemy infantry and cavalry that you can actually harm. Never waste shots on heavily armoured enemies except in the circumstances I describe below where you want to push their morale over the Breaking Threshold. Medium phalanxes and hoplites are targets, but others are better, you will form an idea by trying. I cannot recall the specific order in which I take down enemies except on the battlefield and it changes with the situation.
Note that I barred some parts of the quotation: they are not relevant in multiplayer, since he is referring to fire arrows which have been removed in online games. Also, instead of unarmoured men you should prioritise the targeting of unshielded men: shield is much more important than armour for missile protection, since its protection value is doubled against missile fire. As you can see in this replay, for example, shooting Kluddargos (which have 11 armour but no shield) is a good idea because of the damage you can dish out in short order.
However, another advice that Macilrille gives in the same guide is clear and gets straight to the point: ’shooting at heavily armoured opponents if other targets are present is a waste and should be punished accordingly by a more difficult battle.’
Midgame
During midgame the most important thing that usually happens is the ensuing of the melee. The two lines collide and men start pushing, killing and dying. This is when short-ranged missile fire (aka javelins) truly shine.
There are two big differences between arrows and javelins, apart from range. There are a lot more arrows than javelins, but javelins have a significantly higher attack. This means that each javelin volley is much more important than an arrow volley: javelins must be conserved so that they can wipe out entire units at the right moment. This is true also for arrows, of course, but with the less abundant javelins each volley is relevant.
Also, there’s something that’s not really evident at first glance. In the EDU (export_descr_units.txt, found in EB/Data), the txt file where the stats of all the units in the game are written down, javelins are grouped in a different class than arrows (or sling bullets). In fact, while arrows are ’missile’, javelins are ’thrown’: javelins are basically considered by the game as thrown spears. This doesn’t seem a big deal, until you remember that shields double their protection value against ’missile’ weapon type. WOW. Javelin fire does not give shield value doubling to the unit the javelins are shot at! This is something worth remembering: even if big shield units (Roman infantry, Hoplitai…) are impervious to javelins from the front due to their already high shield value, when soldiers with small shield (3 or less) receive a javelin volley in the face they die much more easily than if they get hit by arrows.
Some factions (Sweboz, Getai) have exceptionally good javelin infantry (high attack, high accuracy, lots of javelins); some factions (Romani, Lusotannan) have access to large number of ap javelins (pila, soliferra) extremely dangerous to armoured foes. Play according to your faction strengths.
Some Germanic warriors from 1st Century BC to 1st Century AD. Note the iron-pointed spears, called ’frameae’ (singular ’framea’). Those spears are one of the reasons why Germanic cavalry in EB is so effective.
Of course, when talking about javelins, frontal fire is not that relevant. We’re in midgame, armies are sufficiently close to each other and flanking manoeuvres are taking place. As I said before, flanking enemy formations and singling out targets with massed javelin volleys are astonishingly effective ways to cause routs or even chainrouts.
Flanking is easier with javelin cavalry, as they are much more mobile; massing is easier with infantry, because they’re more numerous and a lot cheaper. It is also important to remember that flanking your opponent, if not properly done, leaves your units unprotected and vulnerable; in this sense javelin cavalry has an edge over infantry, because its speed allows to quickly unleash a volley or two and then charge to break a wavering unit, while also easily escaping from any retaliation your enemy could prepare.
Unit scale plays a role as well: as I explained in the article concerning differences between Large and Huge, the increase from Large scale to Huge scale increases the killing power of javelin-armed units, especially the ones with lower accuracy. So bear in mind that sometimes more javelins are more important than more accurate javelins.
Lategame
In the lategame missile units somehow lose importance, for the depletion either of the ammunitions or the manpower in the units themselves: one key factor for being effective is unleashing a large amount of projectiles, and this cannot happen when a unit is depleted. However, if you notice some of your melee units still have javelins, it might be worth to expend them in the back of engaged enemies instead of charging immediately. Why? Melee units have generally a high javelin attack; in the lategame units are usually exhausted; exhausted units have fragile morale. All these elements factored together give a much higher probability of insta-routing the targeted unit.
However, you must also choose wisely which unit to target, since the bigger scarcity of ammunitions imposes a greater care. It’s much more important to rout a heavy unit, or a unit that is pinning a lot of your men preventing them to engage in other sectors, than a random unit close to your javelineers.

Europa Barbarorum II is a revised and extended version of its predecessor RTW mod Europa Barbarorum, which has been adapted for Medieval II Total War. This is a full conversion mod (not surprising with M2TW since it’s a different time period).
It features a map spanning (in modern terms) from Ireland and Portugal to Pakistan and Xinjiang, and from mid-Sweden to Ethiopia. This map is twice as big as the original RTW map and features (as of yet) 27 fully playable factions. The team has tried to give each region on the map a number of provinces, so as not to under-represent factions and cultures on the “fringes”. There are fewer regions in the centre than in some Mediterranean-focused mods such as RTR or RS, but more in other parts of the map. This is in accordance with the basic philosophy of the project, which tries to provide the player with a historically accurate depiction of all major factions of the age, and a possibility to experience some factions/cultures that are under- or misrepresented in other media. Among these are not only the European ’barbarian’ factions the original project started with, but also factions from Central Asia and the Arabian peninsula. This does not mean though that others have been neglected. The Hellenistic world, Rome, and Carthage are represented in their full might and splendour.The Europa Barbarorum project is uncompromising in its approach, seeking maximum historical accuracy. That said, characters who were born after the start date will not appear in the campaign, because of the unpredictability of the consequences of the player’s and AI’s actions.
This mod has many features unique from most other Medieval II mods. It includes hundreds of completely brand new units with balanced and historical stats, 1144 turns with four turns per year (instead of the standard 2 turns per year for TW) for a total of 286 years of gameplay, two settlement types - cities and nomadic camps (replacing castles from M2), social-political ideology which replaces religion, numerous scripted historical events such as political/military reforms or invasions, a vast wealth of regional historical and geographical information for each province on the map, unique historical landmarks or buildings for many provinces, native provincial buildings which give a region its dominant native culture, a complex trait and ancillary system for in-game characters, the ability to choose your faction heir, piety ranking will be replaced by management, chivalry/dread rank will be replaced by influence, unique political offices for certain factions, brand new animations for units not present in M2 (such as slingers, phalanx, hoplite, and archer bow strings), permanent stone forts which add income to regions and create greater regional diversity (not for first release), a navigable Red Sea-Nile River canal, buildable authority system which dictates the provinces form of government, a totally new and re-textured campaign map which extends slightly further east than EB I, the possibility of re-emergent or hording factions, and a complex area of recruitment (AOR) system that allows some regional as well as factional units to be recruited by several or even all factions. Alongside a completely redone campaign and battle AI for a more immersive and challenging experience.

Europa Barbarorum was started to more accurately represent the barbarian factions in Rome - Total War as more than unwashed hordes but quickly expanded into accurate representations of all of the factions. Over the X years that EB has existed, EB has completely remade the Rome - Total War game with the goal of historical accuracy and fair representations of all factions. With the completion of Europa Barbarorum Version 1.1 (now 1.2), the team has moved on to the M2TW engine to recreate the Roman Era with the new features available therein.As of yet, several previews have been released (https://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=194571), in addition to some leaks on twitter etc. The Gaza Campaign has been announced to be the first release. No release date given.

Sid Meier’s Civilization VI: Gathering Storm is the second official expansion pack for the turn-based strategyvideo gameCivilization VI. The focus of the Gathering Storm expansion is improving the game world with the weather and how human action affects it in the last eras of the game. The player has to face how their environment changes over time, whether randomly or as a consequence of their environmental decisions.[2]
The expansion introduces natural disasters in the form of volcanic eruptions, river floods, rising sea levels, hurricanes, dust storms, blizzards, tornadoes, and droughts.[3] Players are given ways to mitigate these by building improvements such as dams or sea barriers. Additionally, some of these events can be beneficial to players; for example, after river floods and volcanic eruptions, affected tiles may have their yields increased. The frequency of these events is affected by a new climate system. Late-game buildings can have their effectiveness improved by providing with the new power resource, which can be obtained by burning resources such as coal and oil. However, doing so will increase CO2 levels in the atmosphere, increasing the frequency of disasters.[3] Players are also able to research green power alternatives such as solar, wind and geothermal power stations.[3] The Future Era returns by adding new Technologies and Civics that will be unlocked randomly.[3]
World generation is also changed: new terrain features, geothermal fissures and volcanoes, spawn along mountain ridges separating continents, and floodplains now spawn in larger clusters exclusively along rivers.[3] Mountain ranges, rivers, volcanoes and deserts are now named after the civilization that discovered them.[3] For example, a river discovered by the English might be named the Thames, whereas one discovered by the French could be named the Seine.
Diplomacy is also revamped, with the Diplomatic Victory condition and World Congress from previous games returning with the difference that you will need to accrue a certain number of Diplomatic Victory Points that can be earned in various ways[3] and you will have to win votes multiple times, showing the diplomatic leadership in the different eras, in order to achieve diplomatic victory.[2] The way in which votes are influenced are called Favors, which can increase the weight of your vote. The new Favor currency and a new Grievances system replace the base game’s Warmonger score.[3] The World Congress brings the players a lot more control over building resolutions from different components the way you might a peace treaty, and the international community votes on whether or not your resolution is carried in the session of the World Congress.[3]
A number of systems from the base game and the previous expansion Rise and Fall have been tweaked, including the addition of more Historic Moments, a new Governor, improvements to the espionage system and changes to the science and culture victory conditions.[2]

Nine new leaders and eight new civilizations were also introduced, alongside a variety of new units, natural and world wonders, a new technology and civics era and two new scenarios - The Black Death and War Machine, based on the 14th century pandemic of the same name and the WWI German-French conflict in Belgium respectively.[2]
New civilizations include among others:
*Hungary, led by Matthias Corvinus, who specializes in levying units from city-state allies;[4]
*the Māori, led by Kupe, who uniquely start off at sea and are encouraged to preserve the natural environment;[5]
*Canada, led by Wilfrid Laurier, which has unique units and abilities within cold climate tiles;[6]
*the Inca, led by Pachacuti, who gain unique benefits in relation to mountains;[7]
*Mali, led by Mansa Musa, which can generate great deals of wealth from deserts and trading routes;[8]
*Sweden, led by Kristina, who receives benefits to culture and tourism as well as great people;[9]
*the Ottoman Empire, led by Suleiman, with abilities and units to support sieging of cities,[10]

Does your child’s daily schedule encourage physical fitness? Or is your kid stuck in a rut -- perhaps even a school system -- that leaves little time for physical activity?
We often hear about exercise as a remedy for poor health and child obesity. But exercise for children is important for other reasons too.
It appears to stimulate brain growth and boost cognitive performance. It helps kids focus. It may make it easier for kids to learn and achieve.
So when adults create environments that prevent kids from being active, we aren’t only undermining their health. We’re also making it harder for kids to succeed in school.
But how do we know all this?
Exercise and children: Lessons from mice

At the Salk Institute, Henriette van Pragg and her colleagues compared sedentary mice with mice that ran an average of 3 miles each night on a running wheel (van Pragg et al 1999).

Compared with the couch potatoes, the aerobically-challenged mice showed dramatic brain growth.
Specifically, the hippocampus—-a brain region associated with learning and memory--was twice as large.
In addition, the brain cells of the aerobic mouse could sustain longer bouts of ’long-term potentiation,’ the increased efficiency of communication between neurons that occurs after neurons fire.
Better learning, too
Did these changes translate into better learning? Indeed they did. Mice who exercised performed better on a spatial learning task (finding their way through a water maze).
Why does it work?
Exercise is known to improve mood. Might that explain these results? Perhaps animals learn better when they feel better.
The explanation sounds plausible and may account for some of the effect. But it seems pretty clear there is more going on.
Since the late 1990s, research has revealed that aerobic exercise
*boosts levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a substance essential for the growth of brain cells
*stimulates neurogenesis—the birth of new neurons
*mobilizes the expression of genes that are believed to enhance brain plasticity—i.e., the ability of the brain to change its neural pathway, and
*prevents brain tissue loss in older adults
(For reviews, see Cotman and Berchtold 2002 and von Pragg 2008).What about exercise for children?

Much of what we know about the cognitive effects of exercise comes from brain research on rodents, not humans. But some studies have been conducted on kids, and the results suggest that aerobic exercise can make children more focused and less impulsive.
When kids have been challenged with cognitive tasks that require lots of concentration and attentional control, individuals with higher aerobic fitness have performed with more accuracy, and sometimes faster reaction times, too (Moore et al 2013; Wu et al 2011; Voss et al 2011; Hillman et al 2005; Hillman et al 2009b; Raine et al 2016).
For example, school children were asked to view some images of animals and make quick judgments about them (’Is it a cat or a dog?’), physically fit kids had faster reaction times, and their brains showed evidence of more extensive processing during the task (Hillman et al 2005). Other brain research suggests that fit kids are better at filtering out task-irrelevant information (Kamijo et al 2015).

Studies also indicate that fit children tend to have greater brain volume in the hippocampus, a brain region associated with memory (Chaddock-Heyman et al 2014), and these kids show signs of enhanced long-term retention.
In one study, kids memorized new places on a map equally well, regardless of their fitness levels. But when they were tested on their retention the following day, the higher fitness children performed better (Raine et al 2013).

Intriguing? Yes. But these studies report correlations only. They can’t prove causation. What if more focused, quick-thinking kids are more likely to seek out physical activity? That could explain the results. We need randomized, controlled experiments (Janssen et al 2014). And in recent years, there have been several.
Mounting evidence: What experiments reveal about the cognitive benefits of exercise for children

Exercise and attention

Does a quick bout of exercise make kids more attentive?

In one recent experiment, kids who ordinarily performed poorly on attention tasks improved their accuracy when tested shortly after ’moderate acute exercise’ -- 20 minutes of walking on a treadmill (Drollette et al 2014).
Another experiment randomly assigned 56 school kids to one of three morning school sessions:

* sitting all morning
*getting a 20-minute break of physical activity after 90 minutes; and
*getting two 20-minute physical activity bouts, one at the start and after 90min
The kids who got two bouts of morning exercise performed better on a test of attention, and this was true even after the researchers adjusted for baseline differences in attention and children’s involvement in sports (Altenburg 2015).

And what about ADHD? When researchers tested the effects of short-term exercise on kids diagnosed with ADHD, they found that aerobic activity gave these kids a special boost, altering their brain activity in ways that might enhance self-discipline (Pontifex et al 2013).
These studies address immediate, short-term responses to exercise, and lend support the idea that school recess periods -- breaks for play and physical activity -- can enhance attention in the classroom. But there are also studies that address long-term benefits of exercise for children.
For instance, what happens if you enroll previously sedentary kids in a program of daily physical exercise?
One randomized, controlled study of overweight children found that 40 minutes a day of aerobic exercise improved executive function, that aspect of intelligence that helps us pay attention, plan, and resist distractions (Davis et al 2007).
Another experiment replicated these results, and found that 13 weeks of aerobic exercise was also linked with improved math skills and increased activity in the bilateral prefrontal cortex, a brain region associated with executive function (Davis et al 2011).
Similarly, when Keita Kamijo and colleagues randomly assigned 20 youngsters (aged 7-9 years) to an after-school exercise program, kids who got 70 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day showed improvements solving tasks that taxed executive control and working memory (Kamijo et al 2012). Kids in a control group did not.
And a recent randomized study of more than 220 school children found that kids assigned to engage in 60 minutes of daily, after-school aerobic activities performed better on tests of focus and cognitive flexibility--the ability to switch between tasks while maintaining speed and accuracy (Hillman et al 2014).
So we’ve got evidence that exercise can improve a child’s ability to focus. But does that translate into better academic performance? There is reason to think so.
Physical exercise and academic achievement
Studies suggest that physical exercise yields short- and long-term benefits on achievement in the classroom.

For instance, one experiment found that a 20minute session of walking boosted children’s subsequent performance on tests ofreading, spelling, and arithmetic (Hillman et al 2009a). Another study found that kids who exercised 10-20 minutes prior to a math test outperformed kids in sedentary control group (Howie et al 2015).
And the long-term? As noted above, one randomized study found that kids showed improved mathematics skills after a 13-week exercise program (Davis et al 2011), and other research indicates similar benefits.
In an experiment performed by Daniel Ardoy and colleagues on 67 adolescents, some kids were assigned to get 4 sessions each week of high intensity PE. After fourmonths, these kids performed better than other kids on tests of cognitiveability and earned higher grades at school (Ardoy et al 2014). Adolescents assigned to less intense PE workouts showed no showed no cognitive improvementsover kids in the control group (Ardoy et al 2014).
More recently, kids who were assigned a daily schedule with more physical activity breaks outperformed their control-group peers in mathematics and reading (Tomporowski 2016).
Exercise for children:
A safe bet..but make it fun
Can we assume that exercise will help every child perform better in school? Perhaps not. In some studies of aerobic exercise, the reported effects have been small or non-existent. As Caitlin Lees and Jessica Hopkins (2013) argue, we need more rigorous research to better understand what’s going on. We need to learn more about the details -- including how the effects vary by intensity, frequency, and type of exercise being performed.
But the results aren’t ’mixed’ in the sense that we don’t know if exercise is good or bad for the brain. Clearly, it’s good for the brain. Nor are the results ’mixed’ in the sense that we don’t know if exercise during the school day helps or hurts academics.
When researchers conducted a meta-analysis of 59 studies published over the previous 60 years, they found that physical activity has a decidedly positive effect on children’s achievement and cognitive outcomes (Fedewa and Ahn 2011).
There is no evidence that it’s detrimental, which is striking if you consider that time spent by children in recess and physical education class is time diverted from academic study.
When schools have allocated more time for physical activity, they tend to see cognitive improvements. The worst case scenario is that kids become more fit and healthy, while their academic achievement levels remain the same (Keely and Fox 2009).

So school policies aimed cutting recess or PE -- in order to make more time for academics -- are misguided. We’ve got nothing to lose by encouraging kids to exercise, and much to gain. But there’s a catch: Exercise should be fun.
The mouse experiments are based on voluntary wheel-running. When rodents are forced to exercise, they don’t always reap the benefits.
Thus, it’s important to find fun forms of aerobic exercise for children. Structured activities--like team sports or dance lessons--are good options. But so are nature walks, tree-climbing, roller-skating, and playing hide-and-seek.
In fact, play--like exercise--is good for the brain. Perhaps the most effective forms of exercise for children combine both high levels of physical activity and elements of play.

Invisible, Inc. (which is a play-on-words to ’invisible ink’) is a turn-based tactics stealth video game incorporating elements of roguelike gameplay, developed by Canadian independent studio Klei Entertainment. Gameplay
The game is a turn-based tactics based-game inspired by X-COM, with emphasis on stealth and espionage. In each playthrough, the player takes on the role of an agent handler for covert operations and has three days to prepare for their final mission. This is done by performing various missions across the globe to retrieve information, valuables, equipment and personnel, keeping cognizant of the amount of time taken for travel and missions within that three day period. The player selects two agents to perform these missions to start, and may be able to free other agents during missions; should one agent die during a mission, they remain dead for the remainder of the runthrough unless revived using a medkit consumable or dragged to the exit by another agent, while if all agents die, the game is over.
